Bob Kerr's Whoopee Band

Bob Kerr and His Whoopee Band from a radio show back in the 80's or 90's on a cassette that someone sent to me a while back. Not much info on it unfortunately. Bob is now touring with the re-formed Bonzo Dog Band of which he was a founder member in the 60's.

Bob Kerr continued where the Bonzo's left off after their first couple of albums. The Whoopee Band stayed true to their British Dance Band roots and old scratchy 78's and played lots of novelty songs from the 20's and 30's. I remember them on a kids programme on TV where they dressed up and had silly props to enhance the visual side of their act. Like the Temperence Seven and The Alberts etc, they were steeped in nostalgia for those far off days of the music hall, variety and a weird victorian sense of the absurd.

I find it rather odd that we no longer seem to have comedy bands anymore. This excellent band to one side who, with no discourtesy meant and as good as they are,are hardly of the 'now' generation. Back in the 60's and 70's we had loads of bands who were much liked and respected who were out and out comedy acts or at least featured lots of humour. The Bonzo's, The Scaffold, the Mothers, Bob Kerr's lot, The Incredible String band. Even the Beatles had a crack at funny stuff not forgetting The Kinks. No one seems to do that anymore do they?We had that band that sang about the 'National Express' in the 90's and of course there is Half Man Half Biscuit but no one single band that has gone for humour. It strikes me that they are all too caught up with the myth of being a Rock band, which instantly equates to attitude and a cocky swagger but no funny stuff.
God bless bands like the Whoopee Band!

Sadly the music biz is geared to making money and not making art or making people laugh. One only has to watch the idiots on C4's "Unsigned" to see that.

Thankfully people still make music just for the fun of it and most are playing in bars and pubs etc. all over the land with a dedicated local following. You can see hundreds of them on the interweb where every niche market is catered for.
